I think this is a well thought lesson to scaffold the learning, requiring students to think about what they might know and use the sim to confirm or correct their ideas. Also, having students find real-life applications without specific direction should help them see how learning about fields will help them. I bet you will see interesting discussions if they have time to do their research in class. You could also challenge them to play the game as a reward if they complete the activity.
